International payments rely on a handful of major networks and systems to move money between banks in different countries. Understanding the basics of SWIFT, SEPA, and wire transfers can help you make sense of the terminology you encounter when sending or receiving money across borders.

SWIFT, which stands for the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, is not itself a payment system but a messaging network that banks around the world use to communicate securely about transactions. When you send an international wire transfer, your bank uses a SWIFT message to instruct the recipient’s bank to credit the funds, often routing through one or more intermediary banks along the way. Every bank connected to the network has a unique SWIFT code, also called a BIC, or Bank Identifier Code, which identifies the specific bank and branch involved in the transaction. Because SWIFT transfers can pass through multiple intermediary banks, each of which may deduct a small fee, the total cost and delivery time can vary depending on the route the payment takes.

SEPA, the Single Euro Payments Area, is a very different system designed specifically for euro-denominated transfers between participating European countries. SEPA was created to make transfers within the eurozone as simple, fast, and low-cost as domestic transfers, eliminating the higher fees and delays historically associated with cross-border payments in Europe. A standard SEPA credit transfer typically completes within one business day and usually carries minimal or no fees, making it the preferred method for euro transfers between individuals and businesses within the SEPA zone, which includes all European Union member states plus several additional countries.

Wire transfers is a broader term that generally refers to any electronic transfer of funds between banks, whether domestic or international. In the context of international transfers, “wire transfer” often specifically means a SWIFT-based transfer, though the exact process can vary depending on the countries and banks involved. Wire transfers are generally considered secure and are widely used for larger transactions, such as real estate purchases or business payments, precisely because the amounts involved justify the higher fees typically associated with this method.

Beyond these three, other regional systems exist to serve specific needs. Examples include real-time payment networks that some countries have developed for near-instant domestic transfers, and specialized correspondent banking arrangements that facilitate transfers to regions with less developed banking infrastructure. Many online money transfer companies build on top of these underlying systems, but optimize the experience by using local payment rails on both ends of a transfer rather than relying solely on the international SWIFT network for the entire journey.

When sending money internationally, understanding which system a transfer will use helps set realistic expectations for cost and delivery time. A SEPA transfer within Europe will typically be fast and cheap, while a SWIFT wire transfer to a country outside major payment networks may take longer and cost more due to intermediary bank fees. Asking your bank or transfer provider which network they’ll use, and whether any intermediary banks are involved, can help you anticipate both the cost and timeline of your transfer with more confidence.
