Trans-border vintage car rally reaches Dharamsala

By Hemant Chauhan, Dharamsala: A trans-border vintage car rally, which started from Pakistan's capital Islamabad, has reached Dharamsala en route its final destination, Kolkata.

Eighteen vintage cars that took off from Islamabad on a 4566 kms Himalayan rally through some of the world's most spectacular landscapes entered the picturesque town on Wednesday.

The Rally was flagged off from the Serena Hotel in Islamabad by the Pakistan's Tourism Minister GG Jamal on March 15 and will be visiting Kathmandu in Nepal before proceeding to Kolkata on the last leg of the journey.

Drivers felt the rally offered a great opportunity to explore a country, which is otherwise not possible.

"I think it is a very special way to explore the countries you are going through. Obviously it is much easier to take a plane Kolkata from Germany. But it is different to see how everything changes from Germany to Kolkata by passing through various countries. That is actually the idea behind this," said Christopher, a driver from Germany.

"The drive today through the Himalayas seeing the whole of the mountain region before us was absolutely stunning. Really fabulous roads," said Mike Booth, a driver from United Kingdom.

The thirty six participants, including 18 proud drivers of the classic cars - Bentley, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Vauxhall, Austin, Ford, Volvo and Mercedes Benz - who drove through various cities of Pakistan and breathtaking mountains, visiting the legendary Khyber Pass and the historical Rohtas Fort, are part of the historical Himalayan Car Rally.

The Himalaya Classic Rally visits some of the most unspoiled and challenging places in the world, winding through the Himalayas in Pakistan, Nepal and India for an unforgettable journey in some of the most splendid and evocative scenery anywhere.

It offers the adventurer a never-ending and ever-changing canvas of colour, romance, dreams, splendour, exotic animals and breathtaking landscape.

The drivers, from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Korea, Germany and Australia, said they were excited about the adventure.

All the vehicles, ranging from a model 1936 to 1970 but gleaming to perfection, were flown to Islamabad from London for the start of the month-long rally.
